GLEN CLOVA WALKING WEEKEND
DAY 2 – A.M.
Saturday 27th September, 2008
Glen Doll to Glen Prosen Lodge via Kilbo Path
9 Miles
We were all in good fettle having enjoyed a good meal and good banter the previous evening in the hotel. A good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast had set us up for the day ahead, although the weather was not very promising as we boarded the minibus for the short journey to the car park at Glen Doll.
We set off from the car park and picked up the signposted path to Glen Prosen via Kilbo. The path took us steadily uphill through Glen Doll forest finally emerging onto the hillside at the Shank of Drumfollow. The next mile was a steady, almost straight, uphill climb on a good clear path with Dreish hidden in mist off to our left. On reaching the top of the climb we were suddenly exposed to a strong cold wind. After a brief stop to put on some warm clothing we continued on ‘Kilbo Path’ (which at this part runs parallel with a fence) towards Mayar. Approximately half a mile on at the corner of a fence the Kilbo Path takes a 90 degree turn to the left (west to south) and starts to drop down over the Shank of Drumwhallo. At the turning point Mayar can be seen straight ahead (west). Staying on the Kilbo Path we walked downhill into the woodland at King’s Seat, crossed the Prosen Water and onto the vehicle track near the ruin. Above us on the south shoulder of Hunt Hill a very large heard of deer could been seen making their way up over the skyline. From here our route followed the vehicle track for almost 4 miles passed Old Craig to Glen Prosen Lodge where we met our minibus. Our Plan had been to travel to the hotel in nearby Dykehead where we had arranged to have a soup lunch then return to complete the walk to Glen Clova. After Lunch on leaving the hotel it had started to rain and some members of our group were suffering from sore or blistered feet so we decided to return to the glen Clova Hotel where an afternoon walk would be arranged.
Start time 0930 – Finish time 1330 – Breaks 15 mins.
Summary; A very enjoyable walk with good views. Uphill for first 2.5 miles with an easy second part. In general good underfoot conditions.
Highs; Some lovely views and seeing such a large heard of deer.
Lows; None, but a pity about the rain. A good half day walk enjoyed by all.
