For this leg of the walk we were dropped of by car at the start point. For the first time we were wearing waterproofs and set off walking in light rain. Our route took us from the harbour along a path on the sea front to Cockenzie power station where a path continues round the power station on the sea side past the pier and on to Prestonpans . The path continues through the town at the sea’s edge past colourful mural decorated walls and over a grassy area to the Lagoons at Musselburgh. Work is ongoing at the Lagoons but a path is clearly signposted through the site to the sea wall which is followed until the river Esk is reached. We followed the east bank of the river crossing at the first bridge then returning round past the weir, through Fisherrow to the harbour. From the harbour we were able to walk for a short distance on sand before being forced onto the footpath alongside the B6416 through Joppa to the beach at Portobello. At the north end of the beach we took the path up onto the road (A199) and then the path which runs round the edge of the Sewage Works intending to make our way through Leith Docks. This proved fruitless as part of the Docks are now a secure zone and we had to return to the main road and enter the docks at Constitution St. We made our way through the Docks passed the new Scottish Executive building and back out onto the road (A901) which we followed to Newhaven harbour and on to Granton harbour.
Summary
Not the most scenic of days but none the less interesting. Different from all the other days so far. A lot of walking on tarmac or concrete.
Highs; The cleanliness of the beach at Portobello.
Lows; Not much walking on beach or grass and the access problem at the docks.
