Two days walking were planned for this trip and we made the long drive north on the Monday afternoon, staying overnight in Golspie in the excellent Granite Villa Guest house. The Guest house owner Alan very kindly drove us to Dornoch in the morning and we set off from the beach car park along the edge of the golf course onto the beach towards Embo. On reaching Embo we walked passed the pier and caravan park onto the fabulous Coul Links beach which, as the tide was out, we followed to the sea mouth of Loch Fleet opposite Littleferry. After a tea break stop in lovely sunshine we set off again, initially across the mudflats, before joining the minor road which runs along the south side of the loch. At one point we again made our way onto the mudflats but the hazardous soft mud forced us to return to the road which we followed to the bridge on the Mound. From the bridge we made our way to the car park at the sluice gates and under the bridge keeping on the loch side of the railway line. This part of the route was quite difficult and required caution. We made our way between the marshy loch side and the railway line to Balblair woods where underfoot conditions became much easier. We eventually joined one of the well marked paths through the woods which emerged onto the minor road to Littleferry behind Golspie golf Course. We made our way on a minor road through the golf course back to the sea, walking along the edge of the golf course into Golspie.
Summary; A very flat days walk made difficult at bits by the underfoot conditions. Alterations to our route would be required dependant on tides. Our decision to walk on the mudflats was not a good one and only got us wet and very muddy. Using an alternative route from the bridge on the mound would require crossing the railway line.
Highs; Some fabulous beaches. The stunning views at Littleferry and round Loch Fleet.
Lows; None really, although our decision to walk on the mud flats because the tide was out on Loch Fleet was a daft one and got us a lot muckier than necessary.
