DAY 3
MONDAY 22ND JANUARY, 2007
COVE TO WEST BARNES– 11.5 MILES, 4.0 HOURS

MORRIS, GEORGE AND BILLY

Again we use two cars leaving one at West Barnes and the other at the starting point in Cove. It was another bright, crisp January morning when we set off walking initially on the minor Pease Bay road to the roundabout at Cockburnspath where we walked down the access road towards Bilsdean Creek . At the woods we found a path marked ‘The John Muir Way’ which we followed to a small unnamed sandy bay and a short distance after the long sandy beach at Thorntonloch. Ahead we could see the imposing structure of Torness Power Station and we were pleasantly surprised to find a well signposted excellent path round the seaside perimeter leading to Skateraw harbour. From here our route followed the beach to the distant Barnes Ness lighthouse after which we walked along the lovely White Sands beach. From here we made our way along the side of Dunbar Golf course onto the beach at Dunbar and onwards to the harbour where we had a much needed tea break. Leaving the harbour we picked up the signs for the John Muir Way and walked up passed the swimming pool onto the coast path. The path from here was lovely and wound its way along the coast to Winterfield Golf course on the point at
Belhaven Bay where we crossed the distinctive metal footbridge onto the sands and back to the car at West Barnes.
Summary
Compared to Day 2 this was a relatively short easy walk with nice changes of scenery. Underfoot conditions varied from roads, paths and sandy beaches. Weather again was excellent……..no rain.
Highs; The harbour at Dunbar and coastal path out of town.
Lows; None really a good day again.
