After a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast in the Braeval Hotel we set off from Nairn making our way back to the sea front path walking west out of town passed the golf course. We followed a well used path edging the golf course, through the gorse towards Carse of Delnies where we joined a vehicle track which runs all the way out to Whiteness Head. Caution needs to be exercised here if an addition four miles walking to and back from Whiteness Head is to be avoided and approximately a mile from leaving the golf course we turned south, heading inland. On crossing the Carse of Delnies we set our course on the large buildings of the platform construction yard to our west. After walking about a mile we had to retrace our steps and detour further inland as the Carse of Delnies is criss-crossed by tidal channels which were too deep or wide to cross. We eventually made our way to the construction yard (much of which is now unused) by the service road which continued on back to the beach at Fort George Army Camp. The ranges were not in use and were able to walk at the sea edge to the Fort crossing over the grass banking to the car park on the south side. After walking to the point for photographs we walked at the sea edge on a good clear path through Ardersier after which we had to find our own path passed Fisherton to the new golf course at Castle Stuart. At the end of the golf course we had to walk round the bay as the deep soft mud made a shortcut impossible. Walking on we joined a dirt track road into the lovely hamlet at Arturlie Point where we walked on the minor road to the water treatment works. From here we made our way to the sea edge and as the tide was out were happy to walk across the mudflats to the reclaimed land at the refuse tip. We walked into Inverness where we caught a bus back to Forres.
Summary; One of the hardest days so far due to a mixture of unforeseen detours, at times hazardous underfoot conditions and very warm weather not to mention a bit of fatigue from yesterdays walk.
Highs; Some great views, the amazing Fort George and the lunch break and ice cold beer at the George Inn at Ardersier.
Lows; The unforeseen difficulties particularly at Carse of Delnies.
