DAY 2
Tuesday 16TH JANUARY, 2007
EYEMOUTH TO COVE – 16 MILES, 7.5 HOURS

MORRIS, GEORGE AND BILLY

It was another cold frosty January morning with clear blue skies when we drove to Cove where we left one car before driving to Eyemouth with the other. We continued on the Berwickshire Coastal Path out passed the caravan site keeping as close as possible to the sea taking every opportunity to walk at the waters edge. We walked across the lovely beach at Coldingham Bay and followed the well worn path to the lovely coastal village of St Abbs where we stopped at a well placed picnic table for a tea break admiring the great views south from where we had come. On leaving St Abbs we had to walk from the coast through the village and north for a short distance on the B 6438 before returning to the coast near Starney Bay. Again we followed a well define path on the cliff tops to the lighthouse at St Abbs Head. Passing the lighthouse we walked down the service road to Pettico Wick where we left the road and walked in the cliff top fields keeping close to the sea. The views north up the coast are spectacular. Passing the ‘measured mile’ markers we moved inland to avoid the long, uncrossable gulley that comes in from the sea at Souter and walked on the dirt track road to Dowlaw where we again moved back close to the sea and viewed the unspectacular ruins of Fast Castle. From here in the absence of any distinguishable path we headed for Redheugh Farm in the distance again keeping as close as practicable to the sea. At the farm we took the road to the right back down to the sea edge and followed this to the lovely beach at Pease Bay which we walked across before climbing to again join the cliff tops and the last mile walk to Cove via its lovely harbour.
Summary.
Very satisfying full days walking with, in the main, good underfoot condition and some spectacular coastal cliff and beach views. Evident paths most of the way although map has to be referred to to avoid wasting a lot of time at the gulley at Souter.
Highs; The amazing views from St Abbs northwards to Cove.
Lows; Not noticing on the map the gulley at Souter and having a long detour inland.
