DAY 13
TUESDAY 1 APRIL, 2008
DUNDEE TO ARBROATH
17.8 MILES, 7 HOURS
MORRIS, PHIL AND BILLY

Phil joined us today for his first walk. In planning the next group of walks it became obvious that the most convenient mode of travel would be by train on the East Coast main line. There appeared to be no designated continuous path between Dundee and Aberdeen. We travelled to Dundee by early morning train from Edinburgh and on leaving the station we made our way to the sea front at the site of the historical ship ‘Discovery’. From here we made our way through the dockland area emerging on the A930 for a short distance before joining the seaside walkway to Broughty Ferry at Stannergate (also a designated cycle path). We continued close to the sea passed Broughty Castle and onto the beach which we followed through Barnhill and onto Monifeith. Unfortunately we were unable to walk round the point at Barry Buddon due to live firing on the ranges at the Army camp. A young well mannered soldier with a very large gun had no difficulty in persuading us to make a diversion. From here there is a tarmacadam path which runs between the main railway line and Army camp almost all the way to Carnoustie. At the start of the Carnoustie golf course practice area we took a path down the side of the Army camp fence towards the sea. Edging the golf course we walked into Carnoustie where we enjoyed our packed lunch. From Carnoustie we walked on the grassy path beside the seaside rocks to the small hamlet of East Haven. Approximately 1.5 miles on we joined the long sandy beach which run for 2 miles all the way to Arbroath. On reaching Arbroath we were recommended to take a refreshment at the Tutties Neuk public house opposite Arbroath F.C. football ground. In the pub we met the Landlady Carol, barmaid Ashley and Arbroath F.C. manager John McGlashan who made us most welcome and whiled away a convivial hour with us before John very kindly gave us a lift to the station just in time to catch our train back to Edinburgh. ( Congratulations on Arbroath’s promotion John)

Summary;.  Mainly flat with good underfoot conditions. Map required.
Highs; Great to be back on the walk again after a long break. Tutties Neuk - another nice pub.
Lows; Dodging the minefield of dog’s dirt on the walkway into Broughty Ferry.
