DAY 1

BERWICK ON TWEED TO EYEMOUTH – 9.5 MILES, 4.5 HOURS

It was a cold frosty January morning with clear blue skies when we drove to Eyemouth. We parked the car in a car park near the harbour and boarded a Perryman’s 236 service bus to Berwick on Tweed. The driver was helpful and dropped us at the most convenient point to access the coast south of Magdalene Fields golf course. The walking for the whole of this route was easy following a fairly well trodden Berwickshire coastal path which for most of it length run parallel with the East Coast Main line. The only sign that the border has been crossed is provided by British Rail on the railway line and is marked by a board displaying Scottish and English emblems and flags. The route takes you above Cowdrait and further on Partanhall both are parts on the very picturesque harbour village of Burnmouth. We dropped down from the top path behind Cowdrait and walked along to the harbour before climbing up a well defined road and path to meet the top path again above Partanhall. There are a number of benches on this climb which afford wonderful views of the harbour and south, as well as an opportunity to take a ‘breather’. The route from here follows the cliff tops to Eyemouth, some 4 miles away, via the golf course and a spectacular bay at Fancove Head. We walked into Eyemouth through its busy harbour.
Summary.
An easy walk with good, clearly defined paths. Some nice coastal views which whet the appetite for what’s to come as we head further north.
Highs; The beautiful village and harbour at Cowdrait, Burnmouth and Partanhall.
Lows; My flask was cold.
